In contrast to the multimode versions, in singlemode switches and fibers only the fundamental transversal mode can propagate. This eliminates the speckle effect, and allows the wavelength meters to measure with the full specified accuracy.
The drawback of these types of switches is the limited wavelength operation range. Below this range they function similarly to multimode switches, while above this range they suffer from prohibitively high transmission losses. Refer to the table for the available ranges.
